Kim Dotcom has called the erasure of Megaupload files from European dedicated servers the "largest data massacre in the history of the internet"

Flamboyant web entrepreneur Kim Dotcom has claimed that Dutch web-hosting company LeaseWeb has deleted millions of files from its dedicated servers in what he's called the "largest data massacre in the history of the internet".

The founder of Megaupload said the vast amounts of data - some which, he claimed was evidence to be used in his legal battles against US authorities - were deleted without warning on February 1st, and that he wasn't notified until this week.

Dotcom took to Twitter to vent his frustration, saying "this is a sad day for the Internet. I'm so very sorry that #Megaupload user data in Europe is now irreversibly lost. I'm in tears #Leaseweb".

#Leaseweb has NOT warned us about deleting #Megaupload servers. They informed us TODAY that servers were deleted on February 1st, 2013," he tweeted. ""#Leaseweb is now #Deleteweb".

Leaseweb, however, has hit back at Dotcom's claims, saying that the company kept 630 dedicated servers containing user data available for over a year without any compensation.

In a statement on the company's blog, Leaseweb's Alex de Joode said, "After a year of nobody showing any interest in the servers and data we considered our options. We did inform Megaupload about our decision to re-provision the servers."

Kim Dotcom is currently under investigation by US authorities over his website Megaupload, which they claim cost copyright holders over $500m in lost revenue due to the amount of pirated content uploaded to its servers.
