Google Hangouts has folded in Google Voice in the US

The Google Hangouts app for iOS just got a lot better, especially for those in the US who can now make free phone calls with the all-encompassing, multi-platform messaging and video chat application.

A new update arrived on Friday, essentially folding in Google Voice functionality and thus allowing users to make free calls to anyone in the US and Canada, and cheap calls internationally.

Outgoing calls will come from the user's Google Voice number and incoming calls will be received through the Hangouts app. That feature isn't even available within the Android version of the app yet.

Unfortunately for Brits Google Voice has never made its way across the pond, but fear not there are a few other improvements for users to enjoy.

Namely, Hangouts will no longer halt music when incoming messages are received, which had proved a serious annoyance for some users.

"Incoming messages will no longer stop your music. Instead of interrupting your groove, Google+ Hangouts will now temporarily duck your music, then crank the volume back up," wrote Kate Cushing on her Google+ page.

The app update also sees the return of the green, orange and grey circles next to contacts to indicate who's available and who is idle or offline.

And, perhaps most importantly, animated .gif files will now play in-line within conversations. Thank heavens for that.

A new update for Windows 8 Music app has been released bringing in-app searching and Xbox Music's free ad-supported streaming

The new update for the Windows 8 Music app will now allow users to search directly in-app for music on your PC, or in the Xbox Music catalogue.

Additionally, the Music app will now let you try out Xbox Music's free ad-supported streaming service without logging in to your Xbox Music account, but there is a limit of 15 songs.

After signing in to the Music app on your Windows PC or tablet, you can stream songs for free (with ads). Users are limited to 10 hours/month after 6 months for free streaming. Unlimited steaming is available for Xbox Music Pass subscribers.

Users can also discover new music with the Radio feature, known before as SmartDJ.

Aside from these significant updates, some bug fixes and other UI enhancements have also been carried out.

A few months ago Xbox Music added a feature allowing users to add iTunes playlists into the Music app.

Xbox Music was launched in October last year for Xbox 360, Windows 8 PCS, tablets and smartphones giving access the entire library over one account and across all devices with the usual free streaming for the first six months with a monthly limit.

Vine has released version 1.1 for Android bringing huge improvements to the app's video-making service

The new Vine update for Android brings changes to the mobile app including a direct response to users' feedback by offering the option to clear the cache, meaning unposted Vines will be deleted leaving space for more.

Other features in the update include higher quality and improved synchronization of audio/video, a quicker capture speed, users and hashtag search and the ability to share videos to Facebook.

The update follows Facebook's announcement of Video on Instagram. Instagram now allows users to film and upload 15 seconds worth of video, with the addition of 13 new filters.

In addition to the update, a collection of bug fixes and UI improvements have also been carried out.

Vine co-founder and GM Dom Hoffman have previously promised to "continue to make changes to take advantage of Android's design principles and patterns," Android Police reports.

Vine for Android currently has an average app rating of 3 stars in the Google Play Store, compared to the 4.5 stars awarded to Android's Instagram app, but reports earlier this month showed that Vine took over Instagram in shares on Twitter.

The video-creation app also allows you to embed your videos on the web with different sizes and styles available.
